Two weeks, two whole weeks to be in sunshine and sea water. To get up at 11am and go to bed at 3am. To eat 2.4 desserts a day and to wear outfits that take up half the space of a pair of mens boxers. This was one of the most perfect vacations ever, or in a while. It was the right amount of everything - my jeans beg to differ as they swear I ate a wee bit too much - well then, almost everything!
Sonja, James and I set off for Antiparos after just one night in Athens. I discovered that I can in fact get sea sick, even on a big ferry. The water on our way over was so choppy I threw up 5 times. It was a 4 hour journey. I was not the only one. The crew was handing out stacks of sick-bags along the whole boat. I was never more grateful to reach solid ground, even if it was a tiny island.
Antiparos was a week of real relaxation. It's not devoid of life, but is more of an even keeled, family style island. My favorite thing to do was to walk the main street and pop into gorgeous jewelry stores before heading to our dessert spot - Stones Pub. The name does nothing for it, but the Loukomades were to die for. Never having had them before I could see no reason why deep-fried balls of dough covered in honey, cinnamon and sesame seeds with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream would not be delicious. And delicious they were.
So gently working on our tan and doing water aerobics by day, and eating and strolling by night were the ways of Antiparos. We did get a little adventurous and rented bikes one day. Unfortunately we didn't go for the motorized ones. We rode 13 km to a beach at the far end of the island and along the way sonja had a close encounter with the ditch. On our way back the winds where so strong it felt like we were standing still while pedaling full speed. That was a lot of exercise.
The other exception to our local beach was a day out on a boat where we "made swimming" and barbecue in various gorgeous coves around the island. I've never seen water in such shades of turquoise and blue. I even jumped off the gang plank!
